1. Fujitsu Notebook Offering for Semester 2
ITU is pleased to announce a new round of Fujitsu Notebook offering for CPCE
staff and students in early February, schedule is as follows:

2. Student Notebook with 3G USB Modem Support
A 3G USB modem will be installed to selected notebooks for student notebook
loan service. Student will be able to access the Internet under the coverage
of 3G wireless network in campus when borrowing these notebooks.

3. Software Asset Management (SAM) Exercise 2012
ITU is glad to announce that Software Asset Management (SAM) exercise for
CPCE in 2012/13 will take place in early February 2012:
1. 15 to 28
February: Staff who 'uses' a CPCE/HKCC/SPEED PC/notebook or 'oversees' a
laboratory and/or functional PCs shall visit the CPCE SAM website at the URL
https://sam.cpce-polyu.edu.hk to
download the SAM tool and scan your PC/notebook. You will find that each
software item in the PC/notebook will be classified into one of the
following categories:
• CPCE Software -- Software licensed centrally by CPCE through ITU
• Departmental Software -- Software provided to you by your department
• Personal Software -- Software licences you own
• Shareware -- Software licensed to you under a condition
• Freeware -- Software that you can use for free
• Unclassified -- Software that cannot be classified as any of the above
Please review each category and re-classify any software item as you see appropriate. Do provide a remark in the space provided to clarify the re-classification. You must resolve any
unclassified/unlicensed software found in your PCs/notebooks.
2. 01 to 13 March: Your departmental SAM Coordinator shall update the Department's Software Licence Database based on the scanned results submitted by you. At the same time, ITU will update the Central Software Licence Database.
3. 15 March onwards: SAM Coordinators shall review and re-classify the latest results to ensure that all computers within the Department are scanned and sufficient software licences are acquired for staff in the department.

4. Advice to Students for New Semester, DO and DON'T
DO
• Backup your project work and assignment regularly
• Check your email account regularly, even if mail forwarding is enabled
• Approach ITU helpdesk immediately for any issues noted, for quicker handling
DON'T
• Eat, Drink or Play games in Student Computer Centre
• Last minute printing / Photocopying
• Use Power socket in corridor for safety reason

5. Clock Synchronization with Hong Kong Standard Time
A Network Time Server has been set up in the CPCE campus on January 2012 and
it was enabled to synchronize with the Hong Kong Observatory time service.
The time of the public PCs such as at SCC, classrooms, IT Labs, etc., IP
phone and the PC which joining the domain within campuses would be matched
to the Hong Kong Observatory time from now on. For more information, please

6. Moodle Updates
ITU is pleased to introduce two enhancements on Moodle, namely email
subscription function on news and announcements and extended period of use
on guest student account.
Email subscription function on news and announcements
Email subscription is by default turned on for news and
announcements, every posts saved by teachers will be sent out to students'
college email account. Teachers who want to disable this function, you can
change its setting "Force everyone to be subscribed?" to "Subscriptions not
allowed".
Extended period of use on guest student account
Similar to previous arrangement, guest student account is arranged for every subject
group so teachers can distribute the account to students who don't have
access to your subjects in Moodle during this add-drop period. To
facilitate the testing of your courses with a student privilege, the account
will be extended till the end of each semester. The username and password
will be distributed to teachers' email in the start of each semester. |
