1. Grand Opening Ceremony of Big Data Lab

It’s time to think big and actualise our brilliant ideas. After a long soft launch of Big Data Lab of CPCE since December 2020, a Grand Opening Ceremony took place on 2 September 2021. It is our honour to have Dr. David Chung, JP, Under Secretary for Innovation and Technology, Innovation and Technology Bureau (創科局 副局長 鍾偉強博士 太平紳士), as our Officiating Guest for the Ceremony.

2. Tips on Big Data : Introductive Reading in Big Data

For users who are new to Big Data, there is an introductive reading from Enterprise Big Data framework covering important topics in Big Data like Data ingestion, Data preparation, Data Analysis, Data Presentation, etc. Users are welcome to visit Resources | Enterprise Big Data Framework© and input personal information at “Free Enterprise Big Data Analyst Guide (Level 2)” to download the resource.

3. Tips and Q&A on MS Teams

Q&A on Transcription
Q1. When will transcription start?
Ans :It will start automatically when start recording

Q2. Will transcript be shown in “Conversation” or other place?
Ans : You need to click “More actions”, “Show Transcript” to show transcript during meeting

Q3. Does transcription support both channel (school data sync) and non-channel (outlook appointment) meeting?
Ans : Transcript supports only non-channel meeting with schedule (outlook appointment). Non-channel meeting activated by “Meet now” does not support transcript.

Q4. Can all meeting participants download transcript? Where to download transcript?
Ans : Yes, all participants except for those from external domains can view or download the transcript after meeting. It is available in “Chat” after meeting.

Q5. Does transcript support Cantonese?
Ans : Yes according to Microsoft and user may test out the feature. You need to change language for transcript in order to make it works properly.

Disabling Chat in meeting
It is noted non-Channel meeting (Outlook appointment) allows user to define chat option in meeting options as follows.

Channel meeting (School Data Sync) does not support above options.


4. Reminder on Software Purchase for IT lab (Teaching Staff Only)

On considering processing lead time on software purchase for IT lab, colleagues are suggested to raise IT lab software purchase request for Sem 2 within November. Late submission may lead to delay the availability of software for IT lab class. For details, please contact Mr John Cheung at pfjohnc@cpce-polyu.edu.hk.

5. Reminder on Stylizer on Lectern (Teaching Staff Only)

ITU receives reports about malfunction of mouse of Teacher PC. It is noted some cases are due to interference of stylizer by putting on writing tablet. It can be solved by simply putting stylizer outside writing tablet.


6. 3D Printing Course for Students

Four sessions of Introduction to 3D printing student course were held from 20 September to 29 September 2021. Students learnt 3D design tools like TinkerCAD and ZBrushCoreMini to design their own 3D products.


On completion of design stage, student’s work will be printed by Makerbot Replicator Plus with PLA. Students are also invited to carry a tour to 3D printing room to understand how 3D printing actual works.


7. Malfunctioning of ‘Chrome’ Web Browser App in iOS devices when accessing Microsoft 365 webmail services

ITU received enquiry about the malfunctioning of Chrome browser in iPad/iPhone when accessing webmail services, after consultation with Microsoft, ITU suggests iPad/iPhone users to access your student email or staff email account by Microsoft Outlook App or other browsers such as Safari or Opera Mini until further notice.

8. Update on Mega Sales

On Apple product vendor, HKT, update, they are reviewing product offering on recent Apple product announcement dated 18 October. New product(s) will be added to Mega Sales product page and user is welcome is visit the page for information. Besides, Apple product offering is extended to end of November.

9. Tips on Microsoft 365

Retiring Teams mobile support for devices running on iOS version 13 and below


Microsoft will be retiring the Teams mobile support on iOS version 13 and below. Microsoft will also begin encouraging users to update to the newest version of Teams if they're running builds older than 1 year. The retirement will begin in early November and is expected to complete by mid-November 2021.


Action: Instead of using iOS 13 or below, Microsoft recommends updating to iOS versions 14 and above.


Insights in Microsoft 365 to become part of Microsoft Viva


Personal productivity and wellbeing insights that are currently available to users via the daily briefing email, MyAnalytics digest email, and Insights Outlook add-in will be updated to reflect the Microsoft Viva brand.


Microsoft Viva is a new employee experience platform that empowers people and teams to be their best from anywhere. Powered by Microsoft 365 and experienced in the flow of work through Microsoft Teams and Outlook, Microsoft Viva brings together communications, knowledge, learning, resources, and insights.


As this change begins rolling out from Sept 2021, you will see the following updates:


  • The briefing email, which currently surfaces important reminders from Cortana, will expand to also include personal productivity and wellbeing insights, learning recommendations, and more to help them prepare for the day and week ahead. It will be delivered in users’ inboxes early in the day from Microsoft Viva.
  • The MyAnalytics digest email, which surfaces important insights to help users understand and improve their work habits over time, will be delivered in users’ inboxes near the start of the month from Microsoft Viva and will have a new subject: “Your monthly digest” to reflect its new monthly cadence and complement “Your daily briefing”. The monthly digest will aggregate insights across these four outcomes: focus, wellbeing, network, and collaboration.
