1. New Year, New Enhancement

To prepare for new semester, ITU has carried a series of enhancement during summer and hopefully students and staff can be benefited from new offering, including,

• Upgrading its Wi-Fi System to support 802.11n, the coverage and strengthen of Wi-Fi signal have been enhanced
• Dedicated Internet Access (DIA) has been upgraded from 100Mbps to 1Gbps
• 10 New iMac setup in SCC at HHB campus
• 22 PCs will setup alongside the corridor in SCC at HHB campus
• 2 new Oce printers and 16 PCs setup in express printing areas (6/F in HHB and 7/F, WK campus)
• New seating areas with power socket equipped for notebook users in HHB campus
• Additional notebook computer for student loan service
• Coordinated with 4-vendor to supply their notebook, printers and IT equipment at special price to CPCE student and staff at mega sales
• Trial run of Wi-Fi printing service in HHB campus
• PC upgraded in 5 x IT Labs in HHB campus to support i7 CPU, 8GB memory and Ultra Small Form Factor
• PCs in CLIB in HHB campus were upgraded
• Upgrade e-learning to Moodle 2.3

2. Browser Requirement for New Moodle system

Owing to the upgrade of Moodle e-learning system in the coming 1st semester of 2012/13, users will need a higher version of internet browser in order to access the system. The browser requirement is listed as follows:

• Firefox 13 or above,
• Internet Explorer 8 or above,
• Safari 5 or above,
• Google Chrome 11 or above, or
• Opera 9 or above

Users are strongly suggested to check version of their browser to ensure it supports the latest features such as single-step drag-n-drop upload in Moodle 2.3. A free online tool is available for use at http://www.whatismybrowser.com/ for your easy checking.

Or you can simply download and install the latest version of Firefox at http://www.firefox.com/ or contact ITU helpdesk at 3746-0818 (HHB), 3746-0819 (WK) or email to pfitoper@cpce-polyu.edu.hk for assistance.

On the other hand, teaching staff are strongly advised to attend the Moodle training in order to make your life easier on the update and new features. Please refer to the training schedule below and register for it via Portal.

3. IT Training Workshops for Staff

In view of the substantial changes to new Moodle 2.3 which will be launching in Sept 2012, all teaching staff are strongly advised to attend either "Moving to Moodle 2.3" or "Basic for Moodle 2.3" in order to learn how to use this upgraded e-learning platform efficiently. Apart from e-learning workshops, ITU continues to offer "Using Excel to Give Grading to Student in Moodle" and "Collaborative Work in your Team using SharePoint" to enhance your IT skills.

Staff please login http://portal.cpce-polyu.edu.hk, then select "IT Training Registration" to register the following workshops:

*Moving to Moodle 2.3 (2.5 hours) – for existing teaching staff
Transition from Moodle 1.9 to Moodle 2.3 for existing staff, and new features such as survey, choice and chat room

Basic for Moodle 2.3 (3 hours) -for new teaching staff
Fundamental training on Moodle E-learning system for new staff

Using Excel to Give Grading to Student in Moodle (1.5 hours)
Distribute students' grades individually by importing Excel grade file in Moodle

Collaborative Work in your Team using SharePoint (1.5 hours)
Basic on Microsoft Office SharePoint 2007 (for teaching and non-teaching staff)

Language Laboratory Software - Mplus Training and Trial-run (2 hours)
Introduce new features on MPlus latest version and system trial-run (for English/Interpretation teaching staff)

4. Extension of Student Notebook Loan Service to Saturday

To meet student demand on student notebook loan service on Saturday, ITU is pleased to extend this service to Saturday with effect from this semester. Service hour in Saturday will be 9:00am – 6:00pm.

There is no change of service hour from Monday to Friday and this service will start on week 3, 24th September, like last year.

5. Updated Information for HKCC/SPEED IT Mega Sales 2012

There are upcoming new information and offering for HKCC/SPEED IT Mega Sales 2012 and user is recommended to visit "IT Product Mega Sales" link inside CPCE Portal at http://portal.cpce-polyu.edu.hk, especially for roadshow and stock distribution schedule.
