4. Backup your Course Materials in Moodle

Moodle contains your course materials and provides one-stop access which makes users access the materials conveniently. It is always a good practice to make an extra copy constantly.

For students, all course materials would be archived at the end of the semester. Therefore, you will not be able to access the courses offered in the previous semester after archived. Please backup your notes, assignments, projects, etc. from Moodle.

For academics, you can anytime access your previous courses in Moodle, it would be a good practice to backup your course materials by the end of each semester. The backup procedures can be found at http://it-training.cpce-polyu.edu.hk/mod/book/view.php?id=247&chapterid=314

Should you have any problems for the backup, please feel free to contact ITU helpdesk at 3746-0818 (HHB) or 3746-0819 (WK).

5. IT knowledge: What is RSS?

RSS stands for "Rich Site Summary" or "Really Simple Syndication". It allows you to easily stay informed by retrieving the latest contents from any RSS-capable websites you are interested in. It also saves your time by not needing to visit each site individually.

A RSS-capable website or RSS feed will display an icon like rss img1 rss img2 rss img3 rss img4 rss img5 , so you can subscribe to it. Once subscribed, every time you visit the feed you can retrieve the latest contents. You read a content and it will be automatically marked as read. You can also manually mark the content as unread, it is similar to the read and unread function in email client.

You read email using email client or web-based system. Similarly, you subscribe and read RSS feeds using a RSS reader or aggregator. In our next newsletter, we will talk about the use of popular online RSS reader, Google Reader, in various platforms.
