1. Join CPCE Community of Practice (CCoP) – Staff Only
CPCE Community of Practice (CCoP) is the community of people who shared a common interest in certain areas to exchange knowledge, skills,
experiences and information, ITU would like to invite you to indicate your interest
(
Join Us!) and we will organize some sharing sessions afterwards.
Based on the feedback collected from ITU survey and IT training, the following themes have been identified initially as areas where teaching staff are most interested:
- Innovative Learning and Teaching Sharing
- Evaluating Learning Management Platforms (LMS) such as Moodle, Canvas, Blackboard and so on
- Embracing Mobile Teaching and Learning
Interested staff are welcomed to join, share and exchange their knowledge in CCoP.
Goal and Objectives
With the ultimate goal to enhance teaching and learning across the College, our objectives are:
- To bring together and connect our colleagues who share a common interest in enhancing teaching and learning at CPCE,
and to facilitate their experience sharing and collaborative professional and teaching development
- To develop and promote innovative and effective teaching practices in support of the College's strategic teaching development targets
- To foster the culture of peer support and collaborative professional development in learning and teaching
Expected Outcomes
The following outcomes are expected:
- Development, dissemination and implementation of technological innovations, products and tools
for advancing teaching and learning practices with an impact on student learning
- Building of linkages and relationships between academics and other stakeholders at CPCE to sustain exchange of technological knowledge,
resources and expertise for collaborative improvement of teaching and learning
- Enhancement of CCoP members’ capabilities in teaching and learning through peer learning and professional development supported by the CCoP
- Enhancement of the CPCE’s policies on teaching and learning based on good experience synthesised from the CCoP

2. Student iPad Loan Service and Software List Availability
ITU is pleased to announce student iPad loan will be in service in the semester one, 2016/17 academic year. Student can borrow iPad at Student Computer Centres and service hour is as follows,
- Mon-Fri: 10:00 am - 6:00 pm
Similar to other campus IT facilities, e.g., IT lab, Student Computer Centre, for pre-installed apps and shortcut created in student iPad,
please refer to Software Inventory list in CPCE Portal. Teaching Staff can email to
ITU (pfitoper@cpce-polyu.edu.hk) should you need installation of App or shortcut in Student iPad.

4. Major Upgrade of Moodle
In 2015/16, ITU has upgraded Moodle servers to provide robust stability and performance to end users.
The Moodle version also upgraded from 2.8 to 3.1 with lots of brand new features:
- New feature "Recycle bin" allow teachers to "undo" deletions of course sources and courses (for teachers)
- Drag and drop image into Atto editor inserts it as a file (for all users)
- New table editing features (border styling, sizing and colours) in Atto editor (for all users)
- Support 4-byte characters (some rare Chinese characters for students’ name) (for all users)
- Notify teachers for the change of student enrollments (i.e. student add to / drop from a subject group) (for teachers)
- Support new question types on online quiz, namely Select missing words, Drag and drop into text, Drag and drop onto image and Drag and drop markers (for teachers)
- News and announcements and discussion forums support "pin" discussions to keep them always on the top of the list (for teachers)

5. Launch of New Online and Mobile Instant Response Polling System: Poll Everywhere™ for Staff and Students
ITU is pleased to announce that CPCE has subscribed Poll Everywhere, an online and mobile instant response polling system that can integrate with PowerPoint.
It facilitates teachers to conduct polling and communicate with students, improve teachers' teaching efficiency and students' learning outcomes.
To learn to use Poll Everywhere, staff are strongly recommended to attend the training organized by ITU. First round training sessions in August are completed and
second round in September shall be announced in due course.

6. VeriGuide™: New Originality Checking Tool for Staff
ITU is pleased to announce that CPCE has subscribed VeriGuide, originality checking tool developed by CUHK.
Unlike Turnitin, VeriGuide is eligible to teachers only to submit students’ paper to the system.
ITU is organizing some training sessions in August and September. More sessions will be arranged in coming months.

7. Preview on Turnitin™ Update
ITU is working hard to upgrade Turnitin plugin for Moodle to version 2 and to support new Turnitin Feedback Studio to replace the first generation Originality Report interface,
which allows instructors to view the Originality Report and GradeMark results at the same time as well as toggle filters for the Originality Report off and on.
It is expected to launch this update in the January 2017. Details and training arrangement will be announced in due course.

8. Enhancement of Wi-Fi Access Points and Trial Run of New Wi-Fi Standard
ITU have enhanced Wi-Fi network by the installation of new Access Points(APs) in CPCE campus, these new APs support the latest Wi-Fi standard,
802.11ac which greatly improved the connection speed and the number of concurrent users supported.
Users are welcome to experience the new Wi-Fi speed in the following selected areas:
Hung Hom Bay Campus
- Corridor on UG, 2/F, 3/F, and 14/F
- 9/F and 10/F in library
West Kowloon Campus
- Corridor on UG, 2/F, 3/F, 7/F, 8/F and 11/F of South Tower
- 4/F and 6/F of North Tower and 6/F of South Tower in library
Designated SSIDs, CPCE_Staff_ac and CPCE_student_ac are setup for 802.11ac-enabled devices.
Users may connect to these Wi-Fi SSID by using AD username and password.

9. PC Upgrade in HHB IT Lab
In view of high utilization of PCs and increasing software requirement,
PCs in HHB IT Lab have been upgraded to the latest model during summer time with the following specification,
- CPU : Intel i7 (6th generation, skylake)
- Ram : 32G Ram
- Storage : 512G M2 NVMe SSD
We believe this update can greatly benefit IT lab user.

10. Movable Lectern in HHB UG05 / UG06
To facilitate various activities on HHB UG05 / UG06, lectern in 2 lecture theatres are replaced with movable type.
This movable design provides flexibility to users, apart from the movable component,
the lectern keeps standard features and equipment to support PC, visualizer,
Apple TV, notebook connection, etc. A smaller size (20”) non-touch screen monitor is installed
in the lectern to increase available space for lecturer in lectern.

11. Update in Printing Room and Express Printing Area
As endorsed by CPCE Information and Educational Technology Committee, users are reminded on the following update in printing room and express printing area.
Printing Room (WK-S1116) : By considering venue utilization, WK-S1116 will be restored as IT lab on 2106/17.
Students can make use of SCC and Express Printing Area for printing and computing service.
Express Printing Area in HHB 3/F : there will be one addition of printer in HHB 3/F by reviewing printing utilization.
New Printer is setup in existing printer location which user can locate new setting in one queue.

12. Tips for mobile Teaching : enhancement in Microsoft OneDrive app
It is noted there are several enhancement of Microsoft OneDrive app recently, including,
- Create Microsoft Word and Powerpoint file in OneDrive app
- Highlight, annotate and sign PDF using OneDrive app (No need to use Adobe Reader App)
